Dotted Line

Alfalfa 10, Plaza Alfalfa 10, T 954 213 841. 0900-0100. A bar-café whose main virtue is a range of absolutely delicious cakes baked by the German owner. Cheesecake like it’s meant to be, sachertorte, kirschtorte, it’s all here...

Chile, Av de las Delicias s/n, T 954 235 258. 0900-0400. A cool, yellow bar, popular with students from the nearby faculties. It’s in the quiet heart of the 1929 exhibition area, and has a pleasant, leafy terrace. Frequent live music at weekends.

Picalagartos, C Hernando Colón 5, T 954 226 940. 1600-0230. A decent café with Portuguese-style tiles and a pretty, worked ceiling. Upstairs is the best spot to lurk with a coffee; it’s nice and cosy and decorated with photos of Central America.

Bengué, C Postigo del Carbón 6. 1000-0100. An attractive, modern café – a good spot for coffee, but don’t linger too long as the furniture is designed for looks rather than comfort.

Café Anibal, C Castilla 98, T 954 343 758. Tue-Sun 1700-0300. This likeably strange place is more like a house than a café with a variety of rooms and a bar wedged into the stairwell. There’s a relaxed, leftish vibe about the place, which is beautifully tiled with a wrought-iron entrance.

Tetería Chef Chaouen, C Pelay Correa 83. Tue-Sun 1700-2400. A popular Moroccan-style tea house with low tables, cushions, and chichas to smoke fruit tobacco through. One of a few in Triana; the Baghdad Café at Calle Pureza 22, and the Salam at C Luca de Tena 6 are also good and less touristed.

Caffé Diletto, C San Pablo 41, T 954 212 394. 0800-2330. A pleasant café with wooden beams, old brick walls, and a small terrace. There’s a good range of teas, coffees and chocolates, backed up by decent Italian icecream, pastries and a few savoury options.

La Campana, C Sierpes 1, T 954 223 570. 0800-2200. An institution, the sweet-toothed will love this place for its icecreams and pastries. During Semana Santa, when it’s the place to have a seat booked, it has an impressive display of pointy caramel nazarenos. At other times, try the yemas or the lenguas de almendra.

Qué Punt, C Carlos Cañal 5. 0830-2400. A comfortable, cool bar with nice wooden furniture and table lamps. Good for early evening coffee or breakfasts. On a bit of a German tip, the snacks on offer include pretzels and weisswurst.
