Dotted Line

Apandau, Av María Luisa s/n. 2100-0500. An attractive, spacious discoteca picturesquely set in one of the 1929 exhibition buildings by the Teatro Lope de Vega. Music is mostly Spanish, with plenty of salsa and merengue – there are often classes from 2100-2330 before the place fills up.

Party Ship, Paseo Marqués del Contadero s/n. A glass boat on the river near the Torre del Oro that stages a variety of club nights in spring and summer. Cover charge is E 15 (E 13 with a drink if you pre-book) and the music ranges from drum ‘n’ bass to house and is sometimes of decent standard. Atmosphere is capital H happy and locals stash plastic bottles of booze in the bushes to avoid the costly drinks inside.

Bailodromo, C Castilla 137, T 954 342 204. Wed-Sun 2300-0600. This sweaty, slightly seedy venue is one of Seville’s best for some authentic salsa and merengue, as proven by the significant Latin American contingent that shows everyone else how it’s done on the dance floor.

Boss, C Betis 67. Wed-Sun and doesn’t shut until about 1800 on weekends. This fashionable Seville club on the Triana riverfront has disappeared up its own backside a little in recent years, with more attention paid to the door policy than the DJ line-up. That said, it’s free entry and there’s sometimes some good house music across its spacious interior, which includes four bars.

Río Latino, C Betis 40. 2000-0300, Fri-Sat 0630. The most local in character of the Calle Betis discotecas, this has a youngish Seville set and top-20 Spanish hits. It’s fitted out in fairly attractive fake stone. Free entry and easy door policy.

Bar-Café Seville/Bestiario, C Zaragoza, T 954 213 475. Mon- Wed 1200-0300, Thu-Sat 1200-0600. This café-bar is popular with a suited evening crowd, but as the evening wears on it transforms itself into a discoteca with free entry but hefty drink prices. It’s open lateish most week nights; despite the name, the crowd is fairly civilized and 30-something, dancing away to Spanish top-20 hits under bluey lights and pseudo-modern decor. Its central location can make this a decent option.

Gaudy Sala, C Julio César 3. Wed-Sat 2300-0500. E 6-10, but look out for promotional flyers that give free entry before 0200. A new and upmarket discoteca, one of a few options on this street. Decor is modern chrome, and the door policy is relatively strict. Music is generally the latest pop and dance hits, but there are themed Friday funk nights.

Fun Club, Alameda de Hércules 84. Tue-Sat 2300-0800. A music venue and discoteca with some serious alternative cred in these parts. There’s often live rock, drum ‘n’ bass, or good DJs; entry is often free otherwise.

Holiday, C Jesús del Gran Poder 73, T 954 379 655. Thu-Sat 2200-0500, Sun 1800-0100, but don’t bother before about 0200. E 10 entry includes a drink. Behind the Alameda de Hércules, this massive venue appears comedy kitsch from the lobby with chandeliers and porcelain urns. The interior is very different and spacious with modern dance beats.
