Dotted Line

El Tamboril, Plaza Santa Cruz s/n, T 954 561 590. A small, cheerful bar with plenty of tourists as well as locals. There’s live music daily from midnight until 0300; it’s usually rociera; there’s a replica of the Virgin of Rocío taking pride of place in the centre of the bar; sevillanas are also popular.

El Tejar, C San Jacinto 68. A bar with a good quiet atmosphere, see-through tables and art on the red walls. There’s live flamenco on most Friday evenings.

La Carbonería, C Leviés 18, T 954 214 460. Until 0330. Long-established, popular, sprawling bar, a former coal yard where flamenco is performed at 2230 every night. It’s very touristy, but there’s sometimes a strong gypsy presence too and some of the flamenco is very good. There’s also a late-running tapas counter, a beer garden, and a front bar with free jazz or funk. Free (but the drinks are slightly pricier than normal).

La Sonanta, C San Jacinto 31 (also Plaza Chapina 22), T 954 343 185. A pair of stalwart Triana bars with frequent live flamenco by good local performers. At the time of writing this was on Tuesday (San Jacinto) and Thursday (Plaza Chapina), but ring to check.

La Zapata, C Betis 39, T 954 001 051. Until 0300-ish at weekends. A local Triana bar oblivious to the trendies and tourists in the rest of the street. It’s popular with flamenco enthusiasts and you may well see a top impromptu performance if you lurk about for a while.

Las Columnas de Acaya, C Virgen de Fátima 9. A local Triana joint, completely untouristy, with some sort of flamenco most weekends.

Los Gallos, Plaza de Santa Cruz 11, T 954 216 981, http://www.tablaolos gallos.com E 21 and includes a drink. This is a touristy tablao but definitely one of the best of its kind, with high-quality performers who don’t all seem to be going through the motions. There are two shows a night; go to the later one.

Peña Flamenca Alameda, C Lumbreras 12, and El Bollo, C Fabié 5. Peñas are social clubs organized by groups of people with a particular interest. These are two of many specializing in flamenco; there are often live performances at weekends. Exercise tact; they are essentially bars for members and not tourists, but you’ll have no problems getting in providing you respect that fact.

Sol Café Cantante, C Sol 5, T 954 225 165. Young flamenco artists perform live here every Thursday-Saturday nights from 2100. The quality is usually high and the price reasonable at E 12.
