Dotted Line

E Cervecería La Mar, Av de Coria 5, T 954 343 930. 1200-1600, 1900-0000. A big barn of a place run by Mariscos Emilio whose tasty seafood pops up in a number of places around the city. It’s basically a place to eat prawns and drink beer; a big plate of the former and a litre of the latter will set you back just E 8.10.

E La Primera del Puente, C Betis 66, T 954 276 918. 1100-1700, 1930-0030. Closed Wed. Despite its excellent location on the river, this is a fairly cheap place. The terrace faces the Torre del Oro and the average ración costs E 8. While it’s far from subtle, the food is good; there’s a tapas bar too, decorated with tiled pictures of the river. Recommended.

EEE Taberna del Alabardero, C Zaragoza 20, T 954 502 721. 0800-2400. This hospitality school is also one of the city’s best restaurants. It’s pricey but worth it; the menu changes seasonally, but look out for house specials such as corvina (sea bass) with spinach, kidneys, and grapes, or succulent beef fillet with blue cabrales cheese. There’s a good-value set menú for E 47; for cheaper eats or a coffee, stay downstairs and head to the back.

E Casa Salva, C Pedro del Toro 12, T 954 214 115. Mon-Fri 1300-1700. A colourful and welcoming little lunchtime restaurant with tasty Mediterranean dishes at low prices just near the Museo de Bellas Artes. Recommended.

E Jalea Real, C Santa (Sor) Angela de la Cruz 37, T 954 216 103. A sociable little vegetarian café doing some great feel-good food, especially during the day, when there’s a menú for E 6. Friendly and down-to-earth.

E Mesón Serranito, C Alfonso XII 9, T 954 218 299, also at C Antonia Díaz and Ronda de Triana. 0900-0100, Sat-Sun 1300-0100. A trio of bar-restaurants with hearty, uncomplicated fare, decorated with bulls heads and serving their tails. Quick service, big portions and cheap.

E Orsini, C Reyes Católicos 25B, T 954 216 165. 1200-0100. A colourful and high-quality pizza joint, which also offers many other menu choices. The pizzas themselves are excellent with a real Italian taste and good size for around E 6.

EE Casa Manolo León, C Guadalquivir 12, T 954 373 735. 1330- 1730, 2030-0100. Tasty, home-style food with an emphasis on fresh produce. It’s set in an old Sevillian house and has a pleasant light patio. There’s a good-value menú del día for E 7.20.

E El Caserón, C Javier Lasso de la Vega 9, T 954 215 610. Very atmospheric place with wooden floors, old lanterns and candles. It’s more a place for sitting down and having raciones, which offer better value here. The ham is good, the secreto with cumin sauce excellent, as are the squid brochettes, but its desserts such as plátano flambeado or dátiles con miel that win the day.
