Spains biggest selling daily paper is Marca, a publication devoted solely to sport and nearly wholly to football. Its main competitor, As, comes in fourth or fifth. This gives some idea of the importance of fútbol in Spanish life; a Sunday afternoon generally consists of a massive late lunch, a token stroll, and going with the family down to a local bar to watch the football with a beer and a tapas or two. Watching one of the two big Seville teams play is worth doing, not least for the fact that youll then have hours of potential conversation with locals at your fingertips.
Bullfighting is also big in Seville, but doesnt have the same cross-sectional appeal. If youre interested in the bulls, La Maestranza is something of a temple and a visit is a must; if youre opposed to it, if you dont like it here, you wont like it anywhere.
Bring your swimming costume even if you dont head down to the coast. At five in the afternoon with the temperature hovering at a humid 38º C the public pool will seem like paradise.
