A Long Weekedn In Sydney

Dotted Line

Day one For sunrise get yourself (and your camera) in position at Macquarie Point (harbourside) and the Royal Botanical Gardens which offers one of the best views of the Opera House and the harbour bridge. Then head for the Opera House via the waterfront, taking a short diversion in to the heart of the botanical gardens to see the aromatic bat colony . At the Opera House lose yourself in creative photography or simple awe amidst its shell-like structure and its views across to the bridge. From there, take your time negotiating Circular Quay perhaps stopping for a leisurely breakfast below the concourse, or along Opera Quays. Then, make your way to The Rocks via Campbell’s Cove, where the replica of the Bounty is moored and where you are presented with more stunning views back over the Opera House. Continue round to Dawes Point Park and marvel at the sheer size of the harbour bridge. Other great views are available by climbing the southeast tower (access off Cumberland St). From there, head back towards The Rocks and down George Street (which hosts the bustling Rocks market at the weekend). Sample the many sights and sounds of the rocks and perhaps book a ‘Bridgeclimb’ for the following day . For lunch, (perhaps a croc or roo steak) get a pavement table at the Australian Hotel .

In the afternoon, catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo, or for the soporific, head for Balmoral Beach. Better still, get naked with the locals at the little-known naturist beach Cobblers Beach . In the evening, return to The Rocks or Darling Harbour and cruise the menus for dinner.

Day two Around the following put aside some time for your ‘BridgeClimb’. Again, start early with a fascinating tour of Sydney Fish Market . From there, keeping the wallet firmly closed, head via the Casino to the National Maritime Museum . Be sure to take the submarine tour then cross the Pyrmont Bridge to the Sydney Aquarium . In the afternoon, (preferably on a Sunday) head for Circular Quay and catch the ferry to Watson’s Bay. Sample the seafood delights of Doyle’s on the Beach, or join the fray next door at the al fresco Watson’s Bay Hotel .

Enjoy a leisurely walk to South Head ignoring the barefaced cheek of Lady Bay naturist beach . Hit Darlinghurst for dinner and perhaps Kings Cross for an eventful night on the town . Alternatively try Chinatown and a less riotous night out around Darling Harbour .

Day three Time to relax. Depending on the hangover, either drive to North Head (via Manly) at dawn for the memorable views across the city, or take a more leisurely trip later in the morning by ferry to Manly from Circular Quay. In Manly, spend the best part of the day on the beach, try body boarding or take a surf lesson .

If you are feeling more adventurous head north to see Palm Beach and enjoy the views with a short walk to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse . Alternatively, spend a leisurely breakfast at the beachside cafés at Bronte . Then take the coastal path to Bondi spending the rest of the day on the world-famous beach.

In the evening see if you can secure a last-minute booking for a performance at the Opera House, or see what else is on offer at other city theatres. If that does not appeal perhaps try your luck at the Casino .

As unlikely as it is, if your long weekend is interrupted with inclement weather take in the Australian Museum , or the , or shop in the Queen Victoria Building and the CBD .
