Sydney has some fine pubs in both the city centre and suburbs to suit most tastes. Most are the traditional, street corner Australian Hotels, but there are lots of modern, trendy establishments, pseudo Irish pubs and historic alehouses on offer. Unlike Europe, generally speaking, you will find that most antipodeans do not buy rounds. So beware, dont suddenly offer your group of new friends a tray full of pints expecting to get the kind offer returned. They will just think youre an exceptionally nice foreigner whos had too many and has got lots of spare cash to throw around. Many pubs, especially those along Oxford Street and in Kings Cross, attract a lively, happy and cosmopolitan mix of straight and gay clients. The best drinking area in Sydney is probably The Rocks, where history, atmosphere and, most importantly, darn good beer combine for a great night out. Opening hours vary but most bars and pubs in Sydney with live entertainment stay open into the small hours, especially at weekends. Quieter establishments usually call last orders as early as 2230.
Although the main focus for travellers, particularly backpackers, Kings Cross is not necessarily the best nightlife area in town. True, a great night out (and certainly an experience) is on offer, but recent drug busts in some clubs have given the place a slightly dodgy edge. There are quite a few popular clubs, most of which keep entry costs down to attract the backpacker crowd.
