From UK and Europe The main route, and the cheapest, is via Asia, though fares will also be quoted via North America or Africa. The Asia route usually takes from 20 to 30 hours including stops. There are no non-stop routes, so its worth checking out what stopovers are on offer: this might be your only chance to see Kuala Lumpur. Stopovers of a few nights do not usually increase the cost of the ticket appreciably. The cheapest return flights to Sydney, off-season, will be around £500 (789). Stand-by prices rise to at least £800 (1,263) around Christmas. From New Zealand There are direct Qantas flights from Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington to Sydney. Air New Zealand, and Freedom Air are the other two main carriers, both offering routes that Qantas do not. Expect to pay a minimum of NZ$500 for a return to Sydney. From the Americas There are direct Qantas flights from Los Angeles, Vancouver and New York to Sydney. The cost of a standard return in the high season from starts from around US$2,200 from Vancouver, US$2,000 from New York, and US$1,700 from Los Angeles. There are also direct flights from Buenos Aires to Sydney. Other airlines flying from North America include Air New Zealand, Air Canada, and Singapore Airlines. Round-the-World Round-the-World (RTW) tickets can be a real bargain if you stick to the most popular routes, sometimes working out even cheaper than a return fare. RTWs start at around £750 (1,200) or US$1,500, depending on the season. Sydney is easy to include on a RTW itinerary. Airport information Sydneys Kingsford Smith Airport is located 9 km south of the city centre. Given a major overhaul for the 2000 Olympic Games, its negotiation is pretty straightforward and the facilities are excellent. There is a Tourism New South Wales information desk in the main arrivals concourse where help is at hand to organize transport, accommodation bookings and flight arrival information, T 9667 6065, http://www.sydneyairport.com Additionally, The Sydney Airport Help Desk is located in the centre of the terminal (Departures). Volunteer Airport Ambassadors (identified by gold jackets) are also on hand to answer any questions. Other airport facilities include cash ATMs, Thomas Cook and Travelex Foreign Exchange, car hire, a post office and even a medical centre. Unfortunately due to the threat of terrorist attacks the locker service at Sydney Airport International Terminal is currently unavailable. The airport is open from 0400-2300 daily. Sydneys Domestic Terminal is a short distance west of the International Terminal and has also been fully modernized. Public transport from the airport to the city centre (and between terminals) is readily available within a short walk of both terminal buildings. The green and yellow Airport Express, T 131500, services the city centre (daily 0500-2300) including the Central Railway Station, Circular Quay and Wynyard bus and principal rail stations (bus 300, $7, child $3.50, return $12, tickets from the driver) with connecting services to Kings Cross, Bondi, Coogee (bus 350) and Darling Harbour, Glebe (bus 352). There is a ticket booth in the main bus area. Taxis are readily available outside the terminal (south). A trip to the city centre takes about 30 minutes and costs about $25. There is also a new rail link between the main city stations to the Domestic Terminal every 10-15 minutes, daily from 0500-2400, from $10 one-way (20 minutes).
