Sydney has a thriving gay and lesbian community that has the identity and panache to match any city in the world. Without doubt the main reason for its near legendary status is the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival held every February. The four-week extravaganza is the biggest of its type in the world and offers a wide range of cultural and community events that culminate with a spectacular parade from Liverpool Street to Anzac Parade. Although the event (and the parade in particular) is now immensley popular, congenial and wildly colourful, it took several years after its inception in 1978 as a gay rights protest march to shake off the prejudice and the bigotry that ensued. Even without the festival the gay scene plays a big part in the very fabric of city life with the main focus for social activity being centred around Oxford St, especially at the western end between Taylor Square and Hyde Park, and Newtown, in the inner west. There you will find a conglomerate of clubs and cafés that attract a loyal following with many others attracting a casual mix of both straight and gay.
