Whether its top international fashion labels or jewellery, open-air markets or seafood, Sydney can offer a superb shopping experience. In the city, most of the large department stores, arcades, malls and specialist boutiques are along George Street and in the area around Pitt Street Mall, Castlereagh Street and King Street. Not to be missed is the magnificent Queen Victoria Building (QVB), which is a vast and historic edifice in which the levels of retail therapy are almost legendary. Nearby, connecting George Street with Pitt Street is the smaller, yet no less attractive and historic, Strand Arcade, T 9232 4199, http://www.strandarcade.com.au, built in 1892. The largest of the suburban malls is the Warringah Mall, Pittwater Rd, Brookvale, North Shore, T 9905 0633. The suburbs of Newtown (Kings Street) and Glebe (Glebe Point Rd) have fascinating shops selling everything from cod pieces to secondhand surfboards. Double Bay, Mosman and Paddington (Oxford Street) are renowned for stylish boutique clothes shops and The Rocks is definitely the place to go for a didgeridoo or cuddly koala.
Most shops' opening hours are from 0900-1730 on weekdays. Thursday is late-night shopping until 2100. At the weekend, shops may shut one or two hours early. Sales are generally held in January and June.
