Sport and fitness is part of the national psyche in Australia and the most successful sportsmen and women are afforded the same celebrity and financial status as film stars in the United States, or pop stars in Great Britain. Although Melbourne boasts many of the high-profile national and international sporting events (including the Grand Prix and Australian Tennis Open), Sydney offers some stiff opposition. Domestic rugby league also has a huge following in the city, culminating with the national Grand Finals. In summer international test cricket is the main feature, while in winter rugby union tests and Super 12 matches are held at the Telstra Stadium, just one of several superb sporting venues that are the legacy of the 2000 Olympic Games. Even without any special events, these facilities are still worth seeing, and there's plenty of scope for breaking into a run (or surf or sail or skate or sky dive) yourself.
