Estonians are avid consumers of culture, and plays, concerts and dance performances regularly sell out. It’s worth trying to get tickets, though, because many events are staged in beautiful historic venues worth a visit in themselves.
For a small country, Estonia has produced a remarkable number of world-renowned conductors and composers – Arvo Pärt is the most famous – and the level of musicianship is extremely high. Contemporary dance is also thriving. Mainstream American films take up much of the cinema programme, but there is strong support for local and European films and animation.
Tallinn winds down in the summer, when seaside Pärnu takes over as “summer capital”, although affordable concerts and open-air plays are on offer throughout the summer. Daily events are advertised in the national newspapers and the tourist office. Posters detailing monthly events are found throughout Tallinn; there’s one on Saiakang, just off Raekoja plats.
