Vinoteek, Niguliste 6, T 631 3891. Mon-Sat 1500-2400. A favourite of the city’s elite, who appreciate the upmarket atmosphere, snacks and the 300 or so wines from around the world.

Von Krahli Bar, Rataskaevu 10, T 626 9090, http://www.vonkrahl.ee. 1200-0100, Fri and Sat 1200-0300. This dimly lit, unpretentious late-night venue hosts live music and some of the trendiest parties in town. Although locals mourn the fact that, like them, it’s a bit more grand and grown-up than it was in the good old days, Tallinn wouldn’t be the same without it.

Woodstock, Tatari 6 1st floor, T 660 4915. 1200-0600. Tallinn was not exactly swinging in the 1960s, but this place celebrates the era with a retro 70s feel: comfy sofas and bean bags and a small dancefloor, and a mixed, unpretentious local crowd.

Scotland Yard, Mere puiestee 6e, T 653 5190, http://www.scotlandyard.ee. Sun-Wed 0900-2400, Thu-Sat 0900-0300. Housed in the Rotermanni industrial complex, this prodigiously large pub is gimmicky – fake bookshelves, suits of armour, waiters and waitresses dressed as London bobbies, – but the Englishness evoked by the name has won the hearts of many locals and it’s the kind of pub where people end up dancing.

Buldogi Pub, Jaama 2, T 650 4123, http://www.buldogipub.ee. Sun-Thu1100-2400, Fri and Sat 1100-0200. On Nõmme’s main square, this is the most popular pub in the suburb. A good place to meet the locals and enjoy a game of billiards.

Veerev Õlu, Uus 3a-2, T 044 29 848. 1100-0100, Sun 1300-0100. Another friendly, rustic-style pub with an attractive courtyard.

Pärnu Kuursaal, Mere puiestee 22, T 044 40 367, http://www.kuur.ee. Sun-Thu 1200-0200, Fri and Sat 1200-0400. A vast, fun and lively tavern with live bands playing anything from covers to Estonian folk.

Illegaard, Ülikooli 5, T 07 73 743. Mon-Thu 1200-0200, Fri 1200-0300, Sat 1900-0200. 30-35 EEK. A jazz café frequented by musicians, actors and writers.
