Café Bonaparte, Pikk 45, T 646 4444, http://www.bonaparte.ee. Mon-Sat 0800-2200, Sun 1000-1800 An upmarket, white-walled café in a gorgeous medieval building that echoes the quality of the attached restaurant, Le Bonaparte. Excellent quiches and the best patisserie in town. Great for breakfast.

Chocolaterie, Vene 6 (Meistrite hoov), T 641 8061. Mon-Fri 1100-2300, Sat and Sun 1000-2400, cash only. In a charmingly tumbledown old courtyard, this is a great spot for tea, hot chocolate, coffee or liqueur, not to mention handmade chocolates. The 19th-century decor is romantically nostalgic.

Illusioon, Müürivahe 50/Uus 3, T 641 9833, http://www.tujutoit.ee. 1000-2300. The florid Kinomaja (Cinema House) is the place to go if you want to meet film students. Casual, cheap and mildly bohemian, it serves snacks like omelettes and seljanka soup.

Kehrwieder, Saiakang 1. Sun-Thu 0900-2300, Fri and Sat 0900-0100. Cash only. Cavernous cellar café just off Raekoja, with decadent divans and thick-topped wooden tables for those who prefer to stay vertical. Excellent coffees, teas and organic brews.

Robert’s Café, Viru 13/15, T 631 4750. 1000-2000. On the top floor of the De la Gardie shopping complex, this café has a modern, funky feel, with good views of the bustling Old Town below. Seriously good coffee and simple sandwiches.

Tristan ja Isolde, Raekoja plats 1, T 644 0818. Sun-Thu 0800-2300, Fri and Sat 0800-0100. Cash only. Charming, intimate café-cum-bar with tables under the Town Hall arcade. Excellent coffee and the best background music in town.

Bogapott, Pikk jalg 9, T 631 3181. Summer 1000-1900, winter 1000-1800. A café-cum-art gallery by the city wall. Admire the ceramics as you snack on generous sandwiches or tasty cakes.
