Tallinns first five-star hotel is plush, elegant and hugely romantic, with a crackling fire in winter and a private terrace for long summer nights. Its done up in antique English style, with wrought-iron lights and old prints on the walls, with a homely, intimate atmosphere. Free morning sauna. Prices drop by up to 40% in winter. L The Three Sisters, Pikk 71, T 630 6300, http://www.threesistershotel.com Tallinns newest five-star boutique hotel in a cream-and-yellow trio of medieval merchant houses has a modern designery-feel with funky bathroom sinks and large glass windows that sit well with the old beams and vaulted ceilings. The soft cream furnishings are of superb quality with bathrobes and linen to die for. A Barons, Suur-Karja 7, T 699 9700, F 699 9710, http://www.baronshotel.ee South of Raekoja plats, this Jugendstil-ish building (1912) used to be a bank, so theres no need to worry about your valuables: they can be stored in the main safe. Theres a nostalgic feel, but the rooms are on the small side, and a tad overpriced, although many have Old Town views and underfloor heating in the bathrooms. Suites have their own sauna. A Domina City, Vana-Posti 11/13, T 681 3900, F 681 3901, http://www.dominahotels.com">http://www.dominahotels.com The former headquarters of the Soviet Navy has been transformed into a sparkling hymn to capitalism, with glittering lobby and flamboyant marble staircase. The corridors are wide but the rooms, all in beige and brown, could be larger. Stylish lobby bar, patio garden, sauna and babysitting service. A Hotel St Petersbourg, Rataskaevu 7, T 628 6500, F 628 6565, http://www.schlossle-hotels.com">http://www.schlossle-hotels.com The Schlossles sister hotel has a more corporate feel, but the location, opposite the Cats Well, is superb. Opened in 1850, it was the destination of choice for members of the Moscow nomenklatura during the Soviet era. The top-floor sauna has great Old Town views. A Imperial, Nunne 14, T 627 4800, F 627 4801, http://www.imperial.ee Northwest of Raekoja, this 19th-century building has a section of the Old Town wall running through it: you walk through a gap in it to reach the junior suite. Tasteful decor, with old maps on the walls and unfussy furnishings, and an upbeat bar. B Guesthouse Gloria, Müürivahe 2, T 644 6950, http://www.gloria.ee. Above the splendid Gloria restaurant are a handful of cosy rooms, as well as two suites. All are decorated in 1920s and 1930s fashion. Theres a hint of kitsch in some of the decor, but the idea of tumbling into bed after a wickedly indulgent meal has distinct appeal. Prices drop dramatically in winter. B Old Town Maestros, Suur-Karja 10, T 626 2000, F 631 3333, http://www.maestrohotel.ee. This former merchants dwelling, rebuilt in historicist style in 1928, has spacious, high-ceilinged rooms with large mirrors, dark wooden furniture and, in most cases, baths. Children under 12 free. B Olevi Residents, Olevimägi 4, T 627 7650, F 627 7651, olevi@olevi.ee Surprisingly labyrinthine given its narrow, Old Town façade, the Olevi Residents has spacious rooms with reproduction antiques that might not be to everybodys taste (think cherubs in gilt frames). Larger suites are ideal for families.
