B Olevi Residents, Olevimägi 4, T 627 7650, F 627 7651, olevi@olevi.ee Surprisingly labyrinthine given its narrow, Old Town façade, the Olevi Residents has spacious rooms with reproduction antiques that might not be to everybodys taste (think cherubs in gilt frames). Larger suites are ideal for families. B Taanilinna Hotell, Uus 6, T 640 6700, F 646 4306, http://www.taanilinna.ee. Despite the tumbledown surrounds, this quiet hotel is one of Tallinns most tasteful. The slightly smaller economy twins are great value (1200 EEK), while the sauna has a chic-looking chillout room with CD player. Children under seven free. B Vana Wiru, Viru 11, T 669 1500, F 669 1501, http://www.vanawiru.ee Around the corner from bustling Viru street, this former fashion house announces itself with a bang: the immodestly glitzy lobby has stained glass and a white grand piano; Ivana Trump would be right at home. Rooms are not huge though and the piped music in the corridors may set your teeth on edge. Children under seven free. D Romeo Family Hotel, Suur-Karja 18, T/F 644 4255, http://www.hot.ee/hotel A Russian-run hostelry in a faded 19th-century block on the southern edge of the Old Town, with three large, slightly gaudy rooms with bathrooms, and a pleasant dining room. Old Town apartments are also available. Children under seven free. D Villa Hortensia, Vene 6, T 05046113 Part of the delightfully ramshackle Masters Courtyard complex, near the ruins of the Dominican Monastery, the villa consists of four small, simple and charming duplex apartments with wooden furniture and floors. Above the next-door handicraft gallery, a suite with kitchen and tiny balcony (1200 EEK) is great for families. E Old House Guesthouse, Uus 22, T 641 1464, http://www.oldhouse.ee Simple rooms on the northeastern edge of the Lower Town, as well as Old Town apartment rentals with kitchen and shower for as little as 650 EEK. A Meriton Grand Hotel Tallinn, Toompuiestee 27, T 667 7000, http://www.grandhotel.ee A highly professional four-star former Intourist hotel with a shiny lobby, a glass lift and a fitness centre. Ridiculously perfect views of park and castle from the cocktail bar and rooms on the upper floors. Rooms are on the right side of bland, with beige furnishings and green carpets. Free morning sauna. Children under 12 free. C Unique Stay, Paldiski maantee 3, T 660 0700, F 661 6176, http://www.uniquestay.com. Opposite the Grand Hotel, the 11 Zen rooms are decidedly new-age with aromatherapy, NASA-designed chairs and whirlpool baths. Arty photos lend a touch of gravitas. Free parking, free 24-hour internet access and under-12s free. E Olematu Rüütel, Kiriku põik 4a, T 631 3827, T/F 631 3826, http://www.hot.ee/olematuryytel. The Nonexistent Knight is the only hotel on Toompea, with just three rooms above the eponymous restaurant. The location is fantastic. The rooms could do with freshening up, but are big and light, with a hideously patterned sofa bed. Breakfast is 30 EEK.
