Rooms in the main house are all suites scattered with approriately decadent fin-de-siècle furniture; those in the neighbouring gardener’s house are cheaper and less cheerful.

Yes, that Andropoff: this red-brick edifice near Valgerand beach, 6 km from Pärnu, was built on the orders of the Russian premier, although he died before its completion. It has the slightly gloomy feel of buildings built for the nomenklatura but the rooms, or rather apartments, are a revelation. For 1900 EEK, you get two spacious, double bedrooms, a living room, a sauna, a mini-kitchen, shower, toilet, breakfast. The mini chalets in the grounds (1800 EEK) sleep four and have saunas.

Just back from the beach, this ship- shaped hotel is functionalism at its finest. In the garden stands a tree planted by Lennart Meri, post-Soviet Estonia’s first president. Disappointingly, the rooms are business style and on the small side. It’s worth paying extra for a view.

D Inge Villa, Kaarli 20, T 044 38 510, inge.villa@mail.ee. A pretty wooden villa on a quiet street near the beach. The decor is simple, but the fine pictures on the wall make up for that. There’s a piano, a small garden and a sauna.

D Pärnu Yachtclub Guesthouse, Lootsi 6, T 44 71 750, F 44 71 751, http://www.jahisadam.ee. Simple, modern rooms, some with views of the marina below. Hospitable atmosphere and a decent restaurant with outside terrace.

E Tolli Tourist Farm, T 044 69 908. No-frills accommodation in log cabins and in the rustic farmhouse. There is a rambling garden, and your hosts can arrange excursions and a private boat to bring you to and from the mainland.

B Draakon, Raekoja plats 2, T 07 442 045, http://www.draakon.ee. Opposite the town hall, Tartu’s smartest hotel is used by celebrities, ambassadors and politicians. Some rooms overlook the students’ fountain, others overlook Dome Hill. There is also a sauna in the basement.

D Uppsala Maja, Jaani 7, T 07 361 535, F 7 361 536, http://www.uppsalamaja.ee. In an 18th-century building, this is by a long shot the most charming place to stay in Tartu. The five non-smoking rooms are spacious: one is ensuite, the others share two toilets, bathrooms and lounge areas. Book two rooms and it’s like having your own apartment.
