KK Tanduur, Vene 7, T/F 631 3084, http://www.tanduur.ee. 1200-2400. One of the few decent ethnic eateries in Tallinn. Its dimly lit, refreshingly flock-free and, for those used to the bhajis-and-lager culture of British curry houses, off-puttingly formal. The dishes are generous, tasty and properly spiced, if a little pricey. A good takeaway option if you are self-catering. KK The Three Sisters, Pikk 71/Tolli 2, T 630 6300, http://www.threesistershotel.com. This cellar rest aurant offers a fairly formal dining experience with an unfussy frills-free decor. With an emphasis on fresh produce the menu is creative and changes seasonally. Past delights include a seriously silky pumpkin purée soup and one of the best pork dishes in Tallinn: tender piglet marinated in apple cider and served with red wine and chanterelles sauce. KK Troika, Raekoja plats 15, T 627 6245, http://www.troika.ee 1200-2300. Tallinns most popular Russian restaurant has a terrace on the main square and a stunning vaulted interior that takes you straight back to Tsarist Russia. Serving staples like pelmeni, beef stroganoff, pancakes and salmon pie, its less refined than nearby Nevskij, but its also less stuffy and good value for money. Occasional live Russian folk music. KK Vanaema Juures, Rataskaevu 10/12, T 626 9080. Mon-Sat 1200-2200, Sun 1200-1800. is a cellar restaurant with a suitably homely feel. The background pop music jars, but the food is quality Estonian fare: tender meatballs and succulent fillets of pork with some of the best sauerkraut in town. K-KK Sushi Baar Silk, Kullassepa 4, T 648 4625. 1200-2400. Aimed squarely at Tallinns smarter set, with minimalist Japanese-style decor and ambient music. The sushi is up to scratch, but the real thrill comes from seeing the self-conscious clientele trying to maintain their cool while wrestling with the chopsticks. K Beer House, Dunkri 5, T 627 6520, http://www.beerhouse.ee. Sun-Thu 1000-2400, Fri and Sat 1000-0200; first floor daily 1100-2300, Fri and Sat 1100-0400, live music Fri and Sat. Tallinns only microbrewery is a vast, country-style hall. Its a friendly, down-to-earth place, the beers are good and the food is unfussy and filling: hunters sausages, chicken kiev and prodigiously large pizzas. Shoestring travellers will love the lunchtime happy hour (1200-1400), when food and beer are half price: a pizza and a pint will set you back just 55 EEK. K Creperie sans nom, Müürivahe 23a, T 631 4344, http://www.sansnom.ee. Daily 1100-0100. A little slice of the Left Bank, this sparely decorated place draws a bohemian, intellectual crowd for crêpes, coffee and candlelight conversation. Sweet and savoury pancakes, good salads and French classics like onion soup, all at extremely reasonable prices. K Kloostri Ait, Vene 14, T 644 6887, http://www.kloostriait.ee. Sun-Thu 1130-2300, Fri and Sat 1130-0100. A dirt-cheap, studenty and untouristy self-service eatery offering simple, solid stews and pork dishes with dumplings, sauerkraut and soups. K Peppersack, Viru 2, T 646 6800, http://www.peppersack.ee. 1100-2400. Opposite Olde Hansa (see above), this cavernous place hits the mark in terms of service and design: the dimly lit medieval-style interior is undeniably romantic. The food, however, is hit and miss. Try Against the Plague (pickled pork neck with cheese potato and house schnapps), or Artisans Dream (grilled beef fillet with oven-baked potatoes and sea-buckthorn sauce).
