Although you can do all of the following on a day trip from Tallinn, youll have more fun if you opt for an overnight stay. For nature- lovers, Lahemaa National Park (Land of Bays) has beaches, boulders and beavers, with trails through the forest and around the coast. Bird-watchers should head for the Matsalu reserve, where migrant waders throng in spring and autumn, combining the twitching with a visit to the genteel resort town of Haapsalu. Pärnu is the place for party animals, although it owes its status as the summer capital to its thriving arts scene and spa treatments as much as it does to the beachside bars and nightlife. Estonias second city, the lively university town of Tartu, was the cradle of Estonian nationalism in the 19th century, and has a far more cerebral feel than the commerce-driven capital; from here, a boat trip down the Emajogi River takes you to Lake Peipsi, on the Estonian-Russian border.
