Beer House, Dunkri 5, T 627 6520, http://www.beerhouse.ee. Mon and Tue 1000-2400, Wed and Thu 1000-0200, Fri and Sat 1000-0400. Tallinn’s only microbrewery, with reasonably authentic German brews from 30 EEK (or 15 EEK at lunchtime). Too big to get truly raucous; dance floor upstairs.

Depeche Mode, Nunne 4, T 641 1608, http://edmfk.cafe.ee/dmbaar. 1200-0100, Fri 1200-0400, Sat 1600-0400, Sun 1600-0100. If you’re a fan of the band, this place will be a real exciter: they’re not so much a theme as an object of insane devotion. The music policy is … well, you can guess. The band popped in for a beer during a tour in 2001; the regulars are probably still talking about it.

Gloria Veinikelder, Müürivahe 2, T 644 8846, http://www.gloria.ee. Daily 1200-2300 Gloria the restaurant has one of the Baltic region’s best-stocked cellars, so its next-door wine bar has a headstart on the competition. The sense of refinement, heightened by classical background music, makes this a corking venue.

Guitar Safari, Müürivahe 22, T 631 3360. Mon and Tue 1200-0100, Wed and Thu 1200-0200, Fri 1200-0300, Sat 1400-0300, Sun closed. Mon-Wed 25 EEK, Thu 35 EEK, Fri-Sat 50 EEK. This informal basement bar, with photos of Jimi Hendrix plastered all over the walls, attracts ageing rockers with regular live acts who know how to sing the blues. Reserve if you want a table.

Ilmataar, Kalamaja, T 641 5337.Weird and wonderful Russian karaoke bar near the Balti jaam. A world unto its self where vodka drinking is de rigeur, the dancing is wild, lonesome males buy every woman inthe club a bunch of red roses and even the shyest are somehow persuaded to take the microphone.

Kaheksa, Vana-Posti 8, T 627 4770. Mon-Thu 1200-2400, Fri and Sat 1200-0200. Upmarket, orange-coloured lounge in the Sõprus Cinema complex, with spotlights, exotic tropical decor, leather sofas and a good range of cocktails, fruit smoothies and tasty Italian-style snacks. A good place to see and be seen, although it’s all a bit Patrick Bateman.

Karja Kelder, Väike-Karja 1, T 644 1008, http://www.karjakelder.ee. Sun-Mon 1100-2400, Tue and Thu 1100-0200, Fri-Sat1100-0400. The locals love this resolutely untrendy place and it’s easy to see why: booze and snacks at bargain prices, a casual atmosphere and occasional live music.

Kloostri Ait, Vene 14, T 644 6887, http://www.kloostriait.ee. Sun-Thu 1130-2300, Fri and Sat 1100-0100. Another local favourite, popular with students, intellectuals and creative types for its relaxed atmosphere, cheap drinks and live music.
