Pegasus, Harju 1, T 631 4040, http://www.restoranpegasus.ee. 0800-0100, Fri 0800-0200, Sat 1000-0200 White-walled Pegasus is one of the city’s hottest bars, with excellent weekend DJs and an endless parade of beautiful people hell-bent on partying all night.

Popular, Vana-Viru 6, T 05 951442, http://www.popular.ee. 0900-0100, Fri 0900-0400, Sat 1100-0400. Orange is the colour in Tallinn at the moment, and it’s coupled here with retro 1970s styling. There’s an upbeat feel and soulful house tunes.

Pub Kompressor, Rataskaevu 3, T 646 4210. Sun-Thu 1100-0100, Fri and Sat 1100-0300. High-ceilinged and orange- walled, this lively place attracts a youthful crowd with a mixture of cheap drinks and low-priced pancakes to soak them up.

St Patrick’s, Suur-Karja 8, http://www.patricks.ee. 1100-0200, Fri and Sat 1100-040. Lurking behind the Oirish name is a truly attractive establishment. Quieter than the city’s more established expat hang-outs, so come to chill down, not warm up.

Šoti Klubi, Uus 33, T 641 1666. Sun-Mon 1100-0200, Fri and Sat 1100-0400. The only place in town serving haggis. The whisky menu is more impressive than the food, but the real draw is the garden.

Tristan ja Isolde, Raekoja plats 1, T 644 0818. 0800-2300. A late-night beer under the arches of the town hall is one of those magic Tallinn moments, better still if two hearts are sharing.

Valli bar, Müürivahe 14, T 641 8379. The mother of all bars, this hangover from the Soviet era, which Tallinners in their 50s may or may not confess to having frequented, is resolutely determined not to update its decor. The house speciality, Milli-mallikas, is a toxic blend of tequila, anise and tabasco.

Veinipööning, Viru 18, T 641 8631. Mon-Thu 1600-2200, Fri and Sat 1600-0200. Don’t be put off by the downstairs casino. This is a delightfully rambling wine bar with candle-lit tables, curtains made of corkscrews and with old beds and sofas for lounging on. The selection of wines is modest, but they’re well kept and served.

Vinoteek, Niguliste 6, T 631 3891. Mon-Sat 1500-2400. A favourite of the city’s elite, who appreciate the upmarket atmosphere, snacks and the 300 or so wines from around the world.
