Given the poor state of Estonian railways, it is much more efficient to travel to Tallinn from neighbouring capitals by bus; its also the best option for journeys to Haapsalu, Pärnu and Tartu. There are buses from Riga to Tallinn (5 hrs, 4 departures per day), Vilnius (10 hrs, 2 departures per day) and St Petersburg (8 hours, 5 departures per day). Buses arrive at the Tallinn Bus Station (Tallinna Bussiterminal/Autobussijaam), Lastekodu 46 (trams 2 or 4), T 681 3471, which offers money exchange and a left-luggage facility. Estonian, Russian and Finnish, but only a little English, are spoken at the bus station. A taxi to the Old Town costs around 50 EEK. Trams 2 and 4 go to Viru Hotel and buses 17a, 23 and 23a go to Vabaduse väljak. Expect long delays if crossing the Russian border by bus or car at peak times, for example on Fridays. Eurolines, T 06800 909, http://www.eurolines.com, runs services to many cities further afield to and from Tallinn, including Kalingrad, Moscow, Kiev, Stuttgart, Munich, Cologne, Riga, Vilnius and St Petersburg. From London there is a service to Tallinn via Riga and Vilnius (3 days, £226, 4 departures per week).
