It’s passed the first flush of fashionability but this lively café- cum-bar-eatery serves really good Indian cuisine and Tallinn’s finest selection of teas. With DJs on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, it’s as close as you can get to a clubby atmosphere in daylight.

Kuku Kohvik, Vabaduse väljak 8, T 644 5926. Mon-Fri 0800-2200, Sat and Sun 0900-2100. This inexpensive café prides itself on being artsy, although locals of a certain age say it’s lost the edge it had during the Soviet era.

Kompass, Narva Maantee 7c, Central Hotel, T 633 9811. Mon-Fri 0900-2000, Sat 1000-2000, Sun 1000-1800. As you’d expect from a café on the same site as the excellent Novell restaurant, this funky eatery serves way-above-average snacks and salads in a rather more jovial atmosphere.

Narva Kohvik, Narva maantee 10, T 660 1786. Mon-Fri 0900-2000, Sat 1000-2000, Sun 1000-1800. Decidedly old-fashioned, no-frills hang-out that still has the feel of the Soviet days, but serves a mean pirozhki (Russian pie).

Torino, Mere puiestee 6e. Mon-Thu, Sat 0800-2200, Fri 0800-2400, Sun 0900-1900. Thoroughly modern café with retro 1970s-style white plastic chairs near the port. Turin’s finest, Lavazza coffee, is the house speciality.
