Club Privé, Harju 6, T 631 0545, http://www.clubprive.ee. Wed 2000-, Fri-Sat 2300-0600. 150 EEK, membership required. Run by the organizer of Tallinn’s wild Vibe parties, this trendy venue offers some of the best music in town. There’s live jazz on weekdays, with DJs from the Baltics and beyond on weekends.

Hollywood, Vana-Posti 8, T 627 4770, http://www.club-hollywood.ee. Wed-Sat 2200-0500. 40-120 EEK. The first club to open in the Baltics (they didn’t exist in Soviet days) and still the most unashamedly up-for-it place in Tallinn. Housed in the Sõprus cinema, with Stalinist-era balconies and 1950s stuccowork adding to the charm, it dabbles in hip-hop every now and then, but the remarkably good-natured crowd seems happy with the retro weekend sounds. More offbeat are the video clips of hilarious Soviet-era “advertisements”. You’d have to be downright miserable not to have a good time.

Venus Club, Vana-Viru 14, T 641 8184, http://www.venusclub.ee. Wed and Thu 2200-0300, Fri and Sat 2200-0430. 50-100 EEK. Disco inferno in a former fire station, with Russian techno stoking up a crowd of Russian-speaking twentysomethings.

Nightman, Vineeri 4, http://www.nightman.ee. Fri and Sat 2300-0600, not worth arriving before 0100. Originally a gay club, Nightman gets pretty wild in the wee small hours, the atmosphere fuelled by crowd-pleasing house and soul grooves. A taxi ride away from the Old Town via Pärnu maantee.

Sossi Klubi, Tartu maantee 82, T 601 4384, http://www.sossi.ee. Wed 2000-0100, Thu-Sat 2000-0300, closed Sun-Wed. 60-100 EEK. If you feel out of place at teenage techno haunts, try this friendly club, where a mature crowd come for jazz, blues and rock.

Bon Bon, Mere puiestee 6e, T 661 60 80, http://www.bonbon.ee. Wed, Fri, Sat 2200 til late. The only place in Tallinn where you’re likely to hear bhangra. Much more in tune with western club culture than most of the city’s venues, Bon Bon plays global grooves, house, Asian hip-hop, jazz, and 1970s hits.

Café Amigo, Viru väljak 4, T 680 9300, http://www.viru.ee. 2100-0400, Fri-Sat 2100-0500. Sun-Wed 60 EEK, Thu-Sat 100 EEK. Relaxed atmosphere where thirtysomethings feel at home.

Moskva, Vabaduse väljak10, T 640 46 94, http://www.moskva.ee. Café and restaurant 0900-2400, Sat and Sun 1100-2400. The downstairs café is one of Tallinn’s prime posing points, but it’s less intimidating than it looks from the outside. Shake your tush to uplifting house tunes on the compact dancefloor.

Panoraam, Mere puiestee 8b, T 667 4507, http://www.panoraam.com. 2100-0400, Fri and Sat 2100-0500. 50-100 EEK. The Metropol’s top-floor nightclub attracts a mixed, unpretentious crowd of locals and hotel guests, many of them Finns of varying ages. It has a cheesy holiday disco feel.
