Traditional celebrations are still a vital part of life in Estonia, especially in summer, when those who can rush to rural parts to celebrate midsummer. The three-day country wedding may be a rarity these days but singing, which has always been connected with national identity, remains hugely popular, be it drunkenly around a midsummer fire or at one of the many song festivals. Today, the national song and dance festival is still a huge event, although it has, thankfully, lost its political urgency. Classical and contemporary music festivals are usually excellent and top-price tickets are never more than 200 EEK. In summer, a host of festivals take place outside the capital, especially in Pärnu. Pretty much anything is celebrated, from homemade wine-making to beer, bagpipe-playing and woman-carrying.
