Tallinn can be reached by air, sea and rail. Ülemiste airport is less than 4 km from the city centre, and there are two passenger ports, both within walking distance of the Old Town.
The Old Town is easily negotiable by foot. Outside the city walls, theres a reliable and inexpensive public transport network of trolley buses, trams and electric trains. The cobbled streets of the Old Town provide bone-shaking cycling; elsewhere, the lack of hills and an expanding system of cycle lanes make it a treat. You can visit other cities and the countryside independently by hiring a car or taking coaches, although you should avoid the underfunded railway system. Local travel agencies also arrange trips.
Tallinn is safe at all times of day and night, but beware of pickpockets in touristy areas, the Balti jaam railway station and when leaving clubs and bars late at night. Tallinn is becoming a 24-hour city, and you can easily find somewhere to eat in the centre if you arrive after 11pm, especially on weekends. The bigger hotels are open 24 hours but, wherever youre staying, its best to give warning of a late arrival.
