Typical local fare – pork chop with baked cheese, pelmeni, fried perch, rye bread fried in garlic – is served in the garden of this friendly inn near to the sea. The portions are decidedly large. Occasional live music.

Paat, Rohuneeme tee 53, Viimsi, T/F 609 0840, Sun-Thu 1000- 2400, Fri and Sat 1000-0200. This seafront restaurant-cum-bar resembling an overturned boat has views of the Bay of Tallinn. Solid Estonian pub grub: pork and fish with loads of potatoes.

K Altija Kõrts, Altija, T 32 58 681. Summer daily, winter on weekends. This atmospheric old tavern, where travellers, seafarers, trades and salesmen used to gather, serves traditional coastal food.

K Café Isabella, Palmse Estate. This dreamy lakeside café, in a former bath house, with ornate domed ceiling serves simple snacks, salads and drinks.

K Kolga Hotel, Kolga Estate, T 607 7252, http://www.kolgahotell.ee. Daily 1200-2300. One of the poshest places to dine in Lahemaa. Its inexpensive European menu offers smoked trout, roast duckling, mushroom soup and pheasant. Children’s menu.

K Palmse distillery, Palmse Estate, T/F 32 34167. Salads, omelettes, herring and beef stroganoff are served in a cavernous, candle-lit basement with a roaring fire in winter. They also offer a children’s menu.

KKK Ammende Villa, Mere puiestee 7, T 73 888, http://www.ammende.ee. Sun-Thu 1200-2400, Fri and Sat 1200-0100. This wonderfully restored Art Nouveau hotel is also home to one of Estonia’s most romantic restaurants, whether you eat in the opulent dining rooms or out on the garden terrace. The French-meets-oriental cuisine is inspired.

KK Scandic Rannahotell, Ranna puiestee 5, T 32 945. 1200-2400. More minimalist than Ammende Villa, but no less stylish, this light, cleanly designed restaurant just behind the beach offers extremely accomplished food at surprisingly reasonable prices. Eat outside rather than in if possible, as the main dining area is a little snobby.
