Theatre in Tallinn is thriving. There are many wonderful venues and musical productions can easily be appreciated by non-Estonian speakers. The current scene is fairly conservative, with contemporary Estonia and the Estonian character as popular themes. In the Soviet era, playwrights subtly tackled topics that could not be openly discussed and theatregoers got their kicks by looking for hidden messages. Todays audiences, however, are understandably more interested in escapist entertainment. Eesti Draamateater (Estonian Drama Theatre), Pärnu maantee 5, T 644 3976, http://www.dramateater.ee.
