A longer visit will, in addition to the above, also allow time to linger a while in the citys more secretive spots such as in the medieval streets of the quadrilatero and to relax at greater length in the parco Valentino, perhaps taking in a visit to the Exhibition Halls and the fake medieval castle at its heart. There will be time to mess about on the river in rowing boats or canoes and also to cross the river Po and explore the green hills and parkland that rise above the city. A longer visit will also allow time to visit the fortress of Moncalieri and the majestic hunting lodge of Stupinigi to the south of the city as well the other royal lodges and castles peppered around the outskirts of the city. Depending on the season, visitors with more time should take the chance to head out either northwest to the Alps and the Aosta Valley, ablaze with flowers and beautiful walking trails in spring and offering a wide choice of ski resorts during winter. Under an hours drive east of the city are the world-famous vineyards of the Barolo and Barbera wines, a region of picturesque hilltop villages, guardians of local Italian traditions, and guarantor of fine wining and dining, especially in October when the hunt begins for the prized white truffle.
