Dotted Line

The recently reopened Mont Blanc tunnel has long ensured that Turin was well-connected by road to countries north of the Alps. As far as Aosta the road used to be long and winding but now the A5 motorway has halved the journey time. The A4 motorway between Turin and Milan is one of Italy’s most congested by commuter traffic and peak times (7-9am and 4-7pm) are to be avoided. Tolls are payable on all Italian motorways and for the Mont Blanc tunnel but the more scenic SS (strade statali) are free. EU nationals with their own vehicles need an international insurance certificate, also known as a carta verde (green card). For more information contact Automobile Club Italiano in Rome on T 06 49981, 24 hrs. In case of emergency breakdown call T 116. Traffic news is available from Societa Autostrade T 06 43632121, http://www.infoviabilita.it, or by radio on FM 103.3.
