Due to its Catholic culture and the constant call of the Vatican, Italy has not traditionally been a very gay-friendly place. However, certain cities such as Bologna and Rome, ironically on the Popes doorstep, have established significant gay communities and an accepted and explicit degree of openness. Turin is not yet at that stage although the gay community thrives in the citys significant seam of music-based underground culture and, as in many places, the gay community contributes more than its fair share towards the buzz and nightlife of the city. In this context there are a number of acknowledged meeting points and social hangouts in Turin for gay and lesbian groups and a number of websites and nationwide associations that are worth contacting for further local information.
