EE Monferrato, via Monferrato 6, T 011 8190661. A real slice of Piemonte from the food down to the dialect of the waiters and chef. All the local favourites are on offer here in genuine local surroundings.

EE Porto di Savona, piazza Vittorio Veneto 2, T 011 8173500. Under the arcades looking out over piazza Vittorio, this traditional restaurant serves regional dishes with a slant towards the rice-based cuisine of the Novara region.

E Le Otto Colonne, via Giulia di Barolo 5, T 011 836507. A mixture of dishes from both Piemonte and the Abruzzi region in Turin’s studenty neighbourhood.

E Paglia e Fieno Bistrot, C.so Fiume 11/a, T 011 6604036. More of a French restaurant serving both Italian and French staples, often to the accompaniment of live music and therefore open late.

E Pizzeria Caffe del Progresso, C.so San Maurizio 69/b, T 011 837914. Lunch only. With its name, this ace pizzeria announces its politico-intellectual ambitions, harking back to the revolutionary years of the 1920s and 1930s. Alongside the food, there are often literature recitals and live music.

E Pizzeria Cristina, C.so Palermo, T 011 2481706. The best pizza in the northeast of the city, served up in typically no-nonsense pizzeria surroundings.

E Sotto la Mole, via Montebello 9, T 011 8179398, closed Wed, only open evenings, most cards accepted. As the name says, right under the Mole and therefore in prime lively studentland, a bustling restaurant with great meat and pasta dishes.

E Zero Pizza, via Luigi Tarino 3, T 011 8129743. A shrine to Italian muso Renato Zero – on the music system, in the photos and in the clothes he wore on stage, also displayed. Every pizza is even named after a Zero song. If you don’t recognize the music you haven’t missed anything, but Zero is a pillar of that particular type of Italian music.

EEE Al Garamond, via Pomba 14, T 011 8122781. Delicious antipasti are the speciality in this traditional restaurant, among them the goats cheese ravioli. Also don’t miss the quail in truffle sauce and the original liquorice mousse.
