Construction is already well underway for Turins underground railway, to be completed by 2006. There will be just one line initially running on a north-south axis through the city and connecting the centre and factory districts with the outlying countryside. The plan is that as transport is taken underground, some of Turins major arteries, such as Corso Vittorio Emanuele, will become leafy pedestrian boulevards with fountains, sculptures and cycle paths.
