Valencia - Arts and Entertainment

Travel Guides | Valencia | Arts and Entertainment Valencia

Dotted Line

Valencia isn't in the top league when it comes to theatre and dance in Spain, but the opening of Norman Foster's glassy Palau de la Música did put the city on the cultural map. This was just the beginning of the renaissance of the arts here, and the opening of the spectacular new Palau de les Arts in the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències will undoubtedly bring an even bigger range of artists to Valencia. The city already attracts well-known performers across the spectrum of the arts, but it hopes to entice the megastars with its spectacular new auditorium. It may not be able to top Madrid with its traditional opera houses and theatres, or Barcelona with its excellent cutting-edge performance arts, but it does have a vibrant cultural life with plenty to see and do. The large student population means that there is always some good live music from big-name bands to local groups, and the FIB festival in Benicàssim up the coast is one of the best festivals on the Mediterranean.

To find out what's on, pick up the Friday edition of the local paper El Levante which has a listings supplement (the cartelera), or get a copy of the free Hello Valencia magazine from the tourist office. It also does a three-monthly publication called simply Eventos, which has theatre and exhibition listings. The monthly freebie magazine LaNetro (http://valencia.lanetro.com) also has entertainment listings (in Spanish), and you'll find more in the small, youth-oriented English-language mag 24-7 Valencia (http://www.24-7valencia.com). These can all be picked up in the tourist office, shops and cafés. The Cartelera Túria (E 1.20) has the most extensive listings and covers the whole of the Comunitat Valenciana. Other options incude Qué y Dondé and the glossy magazine Valencia Seminal, and all are available from news kiosks (there are dozens around the Plaça de l'Ajuntament). Films shown in their original language are listed as V.O (versión original), but most films in Spain are dubbed. Monday is usually the día del espectador, when entrance prices are reduced.
