It takes two to three days of steady driving to reach Valencia from the UK (the city is about 1,900 km from London). Motorways charge expensive tolls in France and Spain and ferry fares (see below) can be extremely expensive in high season. Petrol is considerably more expensive than in North America but roughly the same price in France, Spain and the UK. All vehicles must be roadworthy, registered and insured, at least for third party. The Green Card, an internationally recognized proof of insurance, is not compulsory but is strongly recommended. EU driving licences are accepted throughout the European Union; travellers from other countries may need an International Driving Licence. For more information, contact the AA (T 08705 500 600, http://www.theaa.co.uk) or the RAC (T 08705 722 722, http://www.rac.co.uk). In general, standard European road rules apply. The legal alcohol limit is a mere 0.05%, and foreigners can get fined up to E 300 on the spot for exceeding this. The speed limit in built-up areas is usually 50 km per hour, on major roads it goes up to 100 km per hour and on motorways is 120 km per hour.
