Corpus Christi (variable) This religious holiday is celebrated with a procession of Rocas (special floats) which include costumed folkloric characters like Giants and Fatheads along the Carrer Cavallers. Fiesta de San Juan (Midsummer's Solstice) (21-24 June) Bonfires, fireworks and lots of carousing on the streets in Valencia and every town in the region. Las Fogueras (24 June) Alacant has the biggest and best festival celebrating the Midsummer Solstice. Huge fogueras (effigies) are paraded through the streets and finally tossed into an enormous bonfire. Bienal (variable) Valencia's excellent biennial festival of the arts attracts some big-name artists. There are special art exhibitions in most of the major venues (the 2003 Bienal included Solares, a series of site-specific photographs, sculptures and installations which turned the Old City into a stunning outdoor exhibition space) plus theatre and dance performances.
