Dotted Line

The Palau de la Música already has an excellent and varied programme of classical music and opera and attracts major European and international orchestras and opera companies. When the Palau de les Arts opens in early 2004, it is hoped even bigger names will be enticed to the city. For zarzuela (Spanish light operetta), see what is on at major local theatres like the Principal or the Olympia (see under Theatres). Valencia, like Barcelona up the coast, likes to be on the cutting edge, and it is always worth seeing what is on at IVAM, the contemporary art museum which occasionally hosts contemporary music concerts. Valencia is a young, lively city with a big student population and so you can always count on some fantastic live music from big international bands in huge venues to up-and-coming local bands in intimate bars.

Akuarela Auditorium, C/Sant Vicent Màrtir/San Vicente Mártir 305, T 963 822 958, http://www.akuarela.com Fri-Sun 2400-0500. Bus 27. This huge mega-club often hosts concerts by local bands.

Las Ánimas, C/Pizarro 31, T 963 517 578. 1900-0330. Metro Colón. Decked out like the setting for a Gothic horror film with mirrors, candelabras and red velvet curtains, this bar has a pianist on Sundays-Tuesdays and jazz sessions on Wednesday nights.

Café del Duende, C/Túria 62, T 630 455 289 (mob). Bus 5, 5B, 27, 60, 62, 81. Wed-Sat 2000-late. With world music on Wednesday nights and flamenco on Thursdays, this is an intimate and welcoming spot.

Loco Mateo, C/Erudito Orellana 12, T 963 260 526. Bus 80. Metro Àngel Guimera. Wed-Sat. A new, elegant, classy bar with live flamenco, jazz and blues, plus a great selection of wines and tapas.

Matisse, Av Campoamor 60, T 963 555 692. Bus 40. Daily 1900-0200. A great spot with an eclectic range of live music: folk or flamenco on Tuesdays, jazz on Wednesdays, tango (early) on Saturdays, plus a range of weekend concerts covering all kinds of music.
