In 2007, the Americas Cup will be hosted in Europe for the very first time in its 152-year history and Valencia is thrilled to have been chosen as the venue for this historic race. Parts of the port area have already been expanded and improved and will be ready for the pre-regatta to be held in autumn 2004. Huge new improvements to the marina and its infrastructure are expected by the time of the race itself in June 2007.
Valencianos, like most Spaniards, are football-mad and with FC Valencia currently riding high at the top of the Spanish League, the locals have certainly got something to crow about. Their stadium, the Estadio Luís Casanova, is huge and you can usually get a ticket unless there is a game with arch-rivals Real Madrid. For something a bit more down-to- earth, get a (much cheaper) ticket to see Levante, Valencias lesser-known football team, battle it out in the second division.
There is a great range of sports facilities in the Valencia region from world-class golf courses to scuba-diving off the Costa Blanca.
The city has been dramatically improving its municipal sports facilities over the last decade or so, and youll find excellent facilities in almost every neighbourhood (the city councils website, http://www.valencia.es and the local information line T 010, will tell you where your nearest sports facilities can be found).
