Valencias Old City is perfect for an aimless wander. Crooked passages, gargoyles, elaborate tiling and Modernista flourishes appear in the most unlikely places. The New City is less pedestrian-friendly, although the 19th-century Passeig de l'Albereda/Paseo de la Alameda (which runs next to the former riverbed of the Riu Túria/Río Túria) and the gardens which line the riverbed itself are delightful. A crisp, modern promenade lines the whole seafront north of the port towards the adjoining town of Alboraia/Alboraya, perfect for a stroll, especially on summer evenings when much of it is given up to a buzzy street market.
