First Nations Creations Art Co-op, 20 Water St, Gastown, T 6029464. 1000-1800 Owned and operated by aboriginal artists, presenting contemporary, experimental works as well as more traditional stuff. Prices can be more reasonable than elsewhere.

Gallery of BC Ceramics, 1359 Cartwright St, Granville Island, T 6695645. 1030-1730. Run by members of the Potters Guild of BC, this is the place for ceramics, with a large selection that changes monthly. Pieces range from the functional to the fantastical, and prices are generally reasonable.

Hill’s Native Art, 165 Water St, T 6854249. 0900-2100. 1008 Government St in Victoria, T 250-3853911. 0900-1730. Three floors of the real thing, including masks, carvings and jewellery.

Inuit Gallery, 345 Water St, T 6887323. Mon-Sat 1000-1800, Sun 1100-1700. North America’s most extensive purveyor of Inuit arts and crafts, including some very beautiful modern and traditional sculptures and prints.

Industrial Artifacts, 49 Powell St, Gastown, T 8747797. Tue-Sat 1000-1800. A stunning collection of furniture and art that has been ingeniously fashioned from reclaimed pieces of old industrial machinery and wood. Almost everything is painfully desirable.

Rendez-Vous Art Gallery, 671 Howe St, T 6877466. Mon-Sat 1000-1730, Sun 1100-1700. Stylish space with a wide range of work from many key contemporary artists. Anything from landscapes to a big collection of Inuit carvings.

Spirit Wrestler Gallery, 8 Water St, T 6698813. Mon-Sat 1000-1800, Sun 1200-1700. Works by major aboriginal artists, including some outstanding sculpture.
