Dotted Line

DV8, 515 Davie, T 6824388. Mon-Thu 1700-0300, Fri-Sat 1700-0400, Sun 1700-0200. Dark, funky, rather louche bar, with interesting, progressive music and art displays. Belongs in a hipper, savvier city like San Francisco or Amsterdam. Popular with a trendy, alternative crowd, with DJs playing hip, modern sounds till late.

The Lennox, 800 Granville/Robson, T 4080881. Sun-Thu 1100-2400, Fri-Sat 1100-0100. Standard pub with some outstanding but overpriced beers. Located on Downtown’s busiest corner, the small patio is an ideal spot for watching the city rush by.

Lucy Mae Brown, 862 Richards, T 8999199. Mon-Sat 1730-0100, Sun 1730-2200. Stylish favourite with the young and trendy crowd. Downstairs a hip and modern Martini bar plays trip-hop-style music. Upstairs is an expensive restaurant with a Pacific Rim menu.

Nelson Café, 655 Nelson, T 6332666. Mon-Wed 1500-0200, Thu and Sun 1100-0200, Fri-Sat 1100-0300. Small, cosy and unpretentious, with a wooden floor and brick walls, decent inoffensive music and a mixed crowd. Good for a quiet pint and brunch and burgers.

The Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir, T 6811625. 1200-0200. Long-standing, down-to-earth upstairs bar, cosy and atmospheric with lots of wood, knick-knacks and intimate corners. Varied live music every night but Sun, cover about $6-8.

Section (3), 1039 Mainland St, T 6842777. Mon-Wed 1100-2400, Thu 1100-0100, Fri-Sat 1100-0200. Decor is hip and arty, very modern and interesting: high, silver booths, hardwood floor, weird art and artefacts and wrought-iron stools at the curved bar. This and the funky music attract a more hip and savvy crowd than the usual Yaletown yuppies. Heated patio. Food covers all sorts from yam fries and baked brie to calamari and salads.

Soho Café, 1144 Homer, T 6881180. Mon-Thu 1100-0100, Fri 1100-0200, Sat 1200-0200, Sun 1200-0100. Stylish, unpretentious pub kitted out in brick and wood, with simple, rustic tables. Beer, billiards, food, tea and coffee.

SuBeez Café, 891 Homer, T 6876107. Mon-Sat 1130-0100, 1130-2400 Sun). Vast, open warehouse-style space with very high ceilings and huge concrete pillars. Dim lighting and weird art, including big screens showing silent B&W films. Music is equally odd, making for a strange and compelling atmosphere. Large selection of good draught beers and non-alcoholic drinks. Some overpriced food, including breakfast; better for drinks.

The Sugar Refinery, upstairs at 1113 Granville, T 6832004. 1700- 0200. Refreshingly quirky little place that feels like someone’s living room. No two tables or chairs the same, all sorts of visual oddities scattered around, including the menu. Good beers on tap and extremely varied, generally off-the-wall live music almost every night. Attracts an alternative, predominantly young crowd.
