Dotted Line

The Sugar Refinery, upstairs at 1113 Granville, T 6832004. 1700- 0200. Refreshingly quirky little place that feels like someone’s living room. No two tables or chairs the same, all sorts of visual oddities scattered around, including the menu. Good beers on tap and extremely varied, generally off-the-wall live music almost every night. Attracts an alternative, predominantly young crowd.

Alibi Room, 157 Alexander, T 6233383. Sat-Sun 1000-1200, Sun-Wed 1700-2400, 1700-0100 Thu-Sat). Owned and frequented by movie people, this is a seductively hip and happening hot spot. The atmosphere is exciting and trendy without being pretentious or intimidating, the music is modern, well chosen, and loud. Their small menu is also as exciting and innovative as any in town, at surprisingly reasonable prices.

The Cambie, 300 Cambie St, T 6846466. 1100-0100. A favourite for those who like their boozers gritty, down-to- earth and friendly. Huge and smoky with a crowded summer patio. Big selection of cheap beer and food, and pool tables.

Honey Lounge, 455 Abbott St, T 6857777. Sun-Thu 1100-2300, Fri-Sat 1100-2400. Hip and dark bar, big and open, with impossibly comfortable couches smothered in huge velvet cushions and a good Martini list. Loud, upbeat, conversation-killing music makes for a club-like atmosphere without the dancing. Milk Bar next door is a trendy gay bar.

The Irish Heather, 217 Carrall St, T 6889779. Sun-Thu 1130-2300, Fri-Sat 1130-0200. An upmarket and authentic Irish bar and bistro, with a fine selection of ales. Tasteful, intimate interior with a glass conservatory at the back. Frequent live Celtic music and a menu featuring fancy reworkings of Irish staples.

Backstage Lounge, 1585 Johnson, T 6871354. In the Arts Club. Mon-Sat 1200-0200, Sun 1200-2400. Airy and down-to-earth spot with a lively patio, decent food and live music almost every night from 2200 ($5 cover). Popular with students from Emily Carr.

Dockside Brewing Co, 1253 Johnston St, T 6857070. In the Granville Island Hotel. 1700-2230/2400. A hidden gem away from the hordes, with comfy leather armchairs and fine in-house beers. Wood-oven pizza and seafood.

Bin 942, 1521 W Broadway, T 7349421. 1700-0200. Thin room stuffed with weird and wonderful pieces of art. Trendy and lively, with modern but mellow dance music. Reasonable beer selection and an incredible menu of involved, delicious tapas.

Elwood’s, 3143 W Broadway, T 7364301. Mon-Thu 1600-0200, Fri 1300-0200, Sat-Sun 1100-0200. Small wooden floored pub with downbeat feel. Good selection of beer and Martinis. Some nice starters and a few main courses at reasonable prices.
