Elwood’s, 3143 W Broadway, T 7364301. Mon-Thu 1600-0200, Fri 1300-0200, Sat-Sun 1100-0200. Small wooden floored pub with downbeat feel. Good selection of beer and Martinis. Some nice starters and a few main courses at reasonable prices.

King’s Head, 1618 Yew St, T 7386966. 0830-0100. Cosy neighbourhood pub with a classic English feel. Lots of wood and an upstairs balcony area with intimate nooks and crannies. Frequent live acoustic-style music.

Lou’s Grill and Bistro, 3357 W Broadway, T 7369872. Mon-Sat 1100-0200, Sun 1100-2400. Largish trendy bar/restaurant with terracotta walls, interesting art and a patio. Dim lighting, jazzy music and a great selection of beer on tap.

Truffles Bistro, 1943 Cornwall, T 7330162. Sun-Thu 1700-0100, Fri- Sat 1700-0200. Comfy couches, gentle music, tapas-style dishes and decadent hot chocolate.

Public Lounge, 3289 Main St, T 8731944. Sun-Thu 1700-2400, Fri-Sat 1700-0100. Casual, downbeat bar with a mainly young and bohemian clientele. Small but interesting cheap menu and some well-chosen (and cheap) microbrewed beers.

WaaZuBee Café, 1622 Commercial Dr, T 2535299. Mon-Fri 1130-0100 Sat-Sun 1100-0100, Sun 1100-2400. Large, comfortable space, dark, atmospheric and arty, playing loud upbeat music. Wide selection of beers and good food served in large portions. Best place for a drink on the Drive.

The Raven, 1052 Deep Cove Rd, T 9293834. 1100-2400. Spacious, English-style neighbourhood pub with the best selection of draft beers in town. Lots of malt whiskies too. And the food comes in mammoth portions. Live music once or twice a week. Understandably popular.

The Rusty Gull, 175 E 1st St, T 9885585. 1100-2400. Lively neighbourhood pub with good ales on tap, decent food, and frequent live music. Magical views from the patio of the city with shipyards and derelict warehouses in the foreground.

Howe Sound Inn, 37081 Cleveland Av, T 8922603. Sun-Thu 1100-2400, Fri-Sat 1100-0100. The only real choice. Top-notch pub with views of the Stawamus Chief, good food and great beers brewed on the premises.
