Spinnakers Brewpub, 308 Catherine St, T 3862739. 1100-2400. Canada’s oldest brew-pub. Great beer and food. Always packed.

Suze, 515 Yates, T 3832829. Mon-Sat 1700-0200, Sun 1700-2400. Very hip, dark and funky Martini bar with some outdoor seating. Small creative menu with international leanings.

Swans Pub, 506 Pandora Av, T 3613310. Mon-Sat 1100-0200, Sun 1100-2400. Best of the brew-pubs with a great selection of quality ales, a roomy yet cosy atmosphere and above all one of the best collections of West Coast aboriginal art you’ll see anywhere. A magnificent establishment.

On the Rocks Lounge, T 7253100. At the Wickaninnish Inn, 1100- 2300. By far the nicest place for a sophisticated drink, with outstanding ocean views.

The Marine Pub, 634 Campbell St, T 7253277. At the Weigh West Resort. 1100-2300. The best choice in town, with good views and a few choices on tap.

Hummingbird Pub, 47 Sturdies Bay Rd, T 5395472. Sun-Thu 1100-2400, Fri-Sat 1100-0100. Cosy pub with decent food (kitchen closes at 2100). The best place to meet locals.

Fulford Inn, at Fulford Harbour, T 6534432. 1100-2330. Nice pub with rooftop patio overlooking ocean. Basic pub food.

Moby’s Marine Pub, 124 Upper Ganges Rd, T 5375559. Mon-Thu 1000-2400, Fri-Sat 1100-0100, Sun 1100-2400. A fine pub, popular with locals, good for food, and apparently the only place to experience locally brewed Gulf Island Brewery beers on tap.
