Most of the best venues are Downtown or within easy walking distance in Yaletown and Gastown, the latter definitely having the edge on nightlife. Vancouver really comes to life at the weekends, when many places will have live music and possibly a small cover charge. The Vancouver bar and club scene is less lively than it could and should be, mainly due to a set of outdated licensing laws that led the Georgia Strait to describe this as the “city that fun forgot”. A positive side-effect of laws requiring bars to serve food was the burgeoning of a thriving bistro/tapas culture and a whole panoply of funky venues serving drinks with tasty dishes thrown in. It’s now easier to get a drink without having to eat, and bars can stay open till 0400, though most still close around 0100. For the short-term visitor there are more than enough good drinking holes to experience, catering to all tastes. Beer aficionados should definitely sample some of the excellent local microbrews, many produced right on the premises.
Almost all clubs operate from 2100 to a disappointing 0200 and charge a cover of $5-10, with drinks on the pricey side. Certain bars (such as DV8) stay open later than the clubs and can be more lively. Most venues listed here tend to host DJs spinning radically different music every night, which affects the atmosphere and clientele, making generalizations almost impossible. As elsewhere, house seems to be the main club staple, but you’ll also find plenty of funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, jazz and top 40.
