During the summer Vancouver celebrates with an almost continuous chain of events that make the most of the citys many fine beaches and parks. While the three-month Bard on the Beach and month-long Theatre under the Stars keep culture out in the open, just about every type of music has its time to shine. Perhaps the most important event is the 10-day Jazz Festival in June, one of the best of its kind in the country. July is the best overall time to come: topping a packed agenda are Celebration of Light, a two-week international firework competition, Dancing on the Edge, a highly regarded festival of original dance choreography, and the two-week Comedy Festival focused on Granville Island. The Fringe Festival in September is another major event, though not as celebrated as the one held in Victoria in August. If youre coming to ski, you could plan to catch the International Boat Show and Chinese New Year Festival in February, and Whistler hosts a steady stream of winter sports events. January is the best time to see bald eagles near Squamish, and late March sees the mass migration of whales past Tofino.
