A English Bay Inn B&B, 1968 Comox St, T 6838002, http://www.englishbayinn.com This lovely 1930s Tudor-style house is lavishly furnished with antiques, rugs and a grandfather clock, with a pretty garden at the back. The six en suite rooms are quite small and twee, but attractive and comfortable.

A-B O Canada House B&B, 1114 Barclay St, T 6880555, http://www.ocanadahouse.com This 1897 Queen Anne house, sumptuously decorated with period antiques, was once home to the man who wrote the lyrics of Canada’s national anthem. There’s a wrap-around porch, English garden, and sherry in the front parlour in the evenings. The seven en suite rooms, some with fireplaces, are smallish, but suitably luxurious.

A Camelot Inn, 2212 Larch St, T 7396941, http://www.camelotinn vancouver.com A beautifully restored 1912 house with hardwood floors, Persian rugs and decor that for once is not excessive. The four en suite rooms are just as tasteful and reasonably sized. Breakfast included.

B Mickey's Kits Beach Chalet, 2146 1st Av, T 7393342 Close to Kits Beach. Six pleasant, bright and refreshingly no-nonsense rooms, four with en suite, two with balconies. On a quiet road, with a friendly and helpful host. Breakfast included.

C Between Friends, 1916 Arbutus, T 7345082. Three small but agreeable rooms in a house close to the most interesting part of 4th Avenue, but still within walking distance of the beach and park. Only one room has en suite bath, but the nicest has a balcony and skylight. Pleasant sitting room and a very affable hostess.

C Graeme's House, 2735 Waterloo St, T 7321488, http://www.graeme webster.com Close to the most happening section of Broadway. A pretty heritage house with lots of interesting decorative features, plus private decks, a rear flower-decked patio and beautiful gardens. Somewhat let down by the rooms which are a bit small and twee. Continental breakfast included. Friendly and knowledgeable hosts.

B Maple House, 1533 Maple St, T 7395833, http://www.maplehouse.com Close to Kits Beach and Vanier Park. Fairly nice en suite rooms in an attractive 1900 home, whose best selling point is its location close to Kits Beach and Vanier Park. Full breakfast incuded.

B Columbia Cottage B&B, 205 W 14th Av, Mount Pleasant, T 8745327. A pretty house on a quiet, residential; street, with an art deco living room for guests and pleasant gardens. The five en suite rooms are small but attractive. Full vegetarian breakfast included. Helpful owner doesn’t live on site.

B Douglas Guest House, 456 W 13th Av, Mount Pleasant, T 8723060, http://www.dougwin.com The best of three similar B&Bs owned by the same people. Eight fairly large rooms/ suites, with en suite in all but two, and TVs. The decor is simple but elegant throughout, with a small common room and a glassed-in sun room with patio that also serves as dining room.
