Facilities include a big kitchen, laundry, lockers/storage room, a TV room with free movies and a travel desk to book tours. Patio for smokers. Pub crawls five days a week. Situated in a quieter location than its equally popular and well-run sister hotel (in Gastown), this one has small, two-bed rooms or private doubles, but no dorms, and so tends to have less of a backpacker-style atmosphere. There’s a small kitchen, a common room, laundry facilities, coin-op and storage (but no lockers). Various ski/ice-hockey packages are offered. Take bus No 4 (UBC). Built in the 1930s as a barracks, this vast and interesting building is now the largest hostel in Canada, with 288 dorm beds and 10 private rooms, all with shared bath. Very long dorms are divided up into four-bed alcoves. To avoid bed bugs, sleeping bags are prohibited. All the usual top-notch facilities are here: a massive kitchen and dining room, TV room, games room with pool table, library, laundry, big lockers, storage room, bike rental for $20 per day. Open 24 hours, with an information desk in summer. Free or cheap tours and hikes, even activities like sailing. The main factor here is the location, a beautiful and quiet spot right on the beach, but a long way from town. Its common rooms are a good place to meet travellers and pick up information. Free breakfast (coffee and muffin), no kitchen, but the popular, down-to-earth pub downstairs has a cheap restaurant, and there’s an excellent bakery next door. Many cheap activities arranged, such as tours, kayaking and club nights. Convenient but quiet, free shuttle to/ from the bus and train stations. Reservations recommended. Facilities include a common room, big kitchen, laundry and lockers. Private rooms are available for a few dollars more. Also enjoys a fairly central location. Shared common room, café and kitchen. Dorms and private rooms available.
