There is a lot of first-class, hard-core mountain biking around Vancouver, not for the inexperienced. The three main areas, each with multiple tough trails, are Cypress, Seymour and Fromme Mountains. Trail maps of these areas ($6 each), along with some much-needed advice, are available at bike shops. See also Mountain Biking BC by Steve Dunn. Seymour is probably the least difficult of these, but Burnaby Mountain and Fisherman Trail are more appropriate rides for intermediates/beginners. Note that the law requires you to wear a helmet.
