The interior of this upmarket restaurant is plush, opulent and romantic: all dark wood, brass and burgundy, silver and crystal, with a piano, fireplace and cigar room. The food is classic French with a very good reputation. Sunday brunches, afternoon tea and cocktail hour are popular specialities. Reservation recommended.

$$$ Blue Water Café and Raw Bar, 1095 Hamilton, T 6888078. Mon-Fri 1130-2300, Sat-Sun 1100-2300. Upmarket but casual, spacious interior with brick walls, big wooden columns, leather chairs and sofas, soft lighting and jazzy music. Open kitchen serves mainly seafood and steak. Large selection of wines and beers.

$$$ C Restaurant, 1600 Howe, T 6811164. On False Creek. 1130-1430, 1730-2300 (summer and Christmas); 1730-2300 (rest of the year). Some of the best seafood you'll find anywhere. A broad range of choices, prepared in exciting new ways. Great wine list includes many sakes. Large, open and airy interior with views that are even better from the more intimate upstairs balcony. Recommended.

$$$ Cioppino's Mediterranean Grill and Enoteca, 1133 Hamilton, T 6887466. 1730-2300. First-class Italian cuisine in two neighbouring rooms, one strictly formal, the other slightly more casual, both very stylish.

$$$ Diva at the Met, 645 Howe, T 6027788. 0630-1030, 1100-1530, 1730-2200. A contender for the best in town. Classic nouvelle cuisine with a West Coast attitude, prepared with flair and creativity. Decor is bright and elegant, sophisticated but not stuffy. Main courses feature one of every type of fish and meat. Taster menu is your choice of three downsized main courses for $60. Or try the cheese taster menu. Extensive wine list, many offered by the glass.

$$$ Il Giardino Di Umberto, 1382 Hornby, T 6692422. Mon-Fri 1200-1500, Mon-Sat 1730-2300. Top-notch Tuscan cuisine. Wonderful interior with sloping ceilings, terracotta walls, bright tasteful art, lots of plants and racks of wine. Several rooms of differing sizes and a tiled, enclosed garden patio that must be the nicest in town. Extensive wine list.

$$$ Joe Forte's Oyster House, 777 Thurlow, T 6691904. Mon-Sat 1100-2230, Sun 1100-2200. A beautifully opulent hall, dominated by a large horseshoe bar and furnished with brass banisters, wrought iron, marble columns, high ceilings and huge mirrors. The menu focuses on seafood, especially oysters. Great selection of beers and an award-winning wine list. Live piano music every night. Roof garden with smoking lounge and fireplace.

$$$ La Terrazza, 1088 Cambie, T 8994449. 1700-2300. Italian cuisine done West Coast style, focusing on game and fish, using fresh ingredients like mixed organic greens and wild mushrooms. Tiles and murals dominate the modern, Mediterranean setting.

$$$ Le Crocodile, 909 Burrard, T 6694298. Mon-Fri 1130-1400, Mon-Sat 1730-2300. Sophisticated yet simple French-influenced cuisine. The ambience is upmarket bistro and the prices are reasonable for food of this calibre.
